Obituary for Robert M. Mantyh

Passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, age 94 years. Robert was born November 28, 1924, in West Allis, WI. He was one of five children of Iola and John Mantyh. After graduating from West Allis High School he enlisted in the Marines and served in the South Pacific Theater as a Turret Gunner in a torpedo bomber He subsequently attended Marquette University and received a Bachelor of Engineering degree. He worked at the Design Firms of Darby Bogner, Pi Vavra, his own Design firm and later created BMR Design. Some of his signature buildings in Southeastern WI. are West Allis City Hall, West Allis Memorial Hospital, West Allis Lincoln Library, Holy Apostle’s Catholic Church, St Matthias Catholic Church, and Sacred Heart Church, Racine. Robert was involved in numerous organizations. Robert was a man of impeccable integrity throughout his life; he served on the parish council at St Matthias Church. As a member of Catholic Family Movement, he became an activist in the Civil Rights movement in Milwaukee during the 1960’s courageously petitioning for Open Housing. His commitment to fairness and opportunity for all continued throughout his entire life. He designed and built a cabin in Door County, WI with his sons where he and his wife spent decades vacationing and enjoying nature. Beloved husband for 54 years of the late Shirley (nee Freeman-Young). Preceded in death by siblings William Mantyh, Dorothy Francis, and Daniel Mantyh. Grandchildren Michael Mantyh and Joshua Smith. Loving father of Mark, Shawn (Joel) Smith, Robin Elizabeth, Paul (the late Joyce), Kristin (Curtis) Crain, David, Peter, Joseph (Nancy) Mantyh. Dear brother of Barbara (John) Kendziorski. Also survived by 23 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Visitation Saturday, January 5, 2019, at the Funeral Home 9 AM until the time of Funeral Service at 11 AM. Interment at Highland Memorial Park. A special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Harbor Chase Memory Care and Vitas Hospice. Memorials to Paralyzed Veterans of America appreciated.
